E-Bike Lights: Do You Need Different Lights for an Electric Bike?

If you've just bought an electric bike, e-bike lights are an easy thing to overthink. The short version: legally, an e-bike needs exactly the same lights as any other bike, and a normal set of USB rechargeable lights will do the job. The longer version is more interesting, because an electric bike gets you moving faster and further into the dark than a push bike, and that quietly changes what's worth fitting. Here's what actually matters when you're choosing lights for an electric bike in the UK.

Do electric bikes legally need different lights?

No. An electric bike that fits the UK definition of an EAPC, meaning pedal assist up to 15.5mph and a motor of 250 watts or less, is treated as a normal pedal cycle in law. That means the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 apply just as they would to a push bike: between sunset and sunrise you need a white front light, a red rear light, a red rear reflector and amber pedal reflectors.

There's no special e-bike clause and no minimum brightness written into the law. A modest 50 lumen rear light technically ticks the legal box. What changes is what's sensible, not what's required.

The exception: speed pedelecs

One type of electric bike does need different lights, and it's worth knowing whether you've got one. A speed pedelec, or S-pedelec, assists all the way up to 28mph (45km/h). In the UK that isn't an EAPC at all. It's classed as a moped, so it needs registration, insurance, a licence and the kind of E-MARK approved lighting a motorbike runs. If your bike cuts its assist at 15.5mph, you're fine with normal bike lights. If it keeps pulling to 28mph, the rules are a different story entirely.

If your e-bike already has built-in lights

Plenty of mid range and higher end e-bikes come with lights wired into the main battery, usually switched from the bar display. It's a tidy setup: nothing extra to charge, and the lights come on with the bike. The catch is that factory fitted lights are usually built to be seen by, not to see by. Many sit around the 20 to 70 lux mark, which is fine on lit streets but underwhelming down a dark lane.

You generally can't just drop a brighter unit in, because the motor controller only feeds the light circuit a few watts. The simplest fix isn't to fight the wiring. It's to add a brighter front light on the bars and leave the built-in one running as a daytime and backup light. Two lights pointing forward is no bad thing on a fast bike.

If your e-bike came with no lights

Budget e-bikes, older models and home conversions often arrive with no lights at all. Here a standard set of USB rechargeable bike lights is genuinely all you need, and it's the same kit a normal commuter would buy. There's no benefit to hunting down something badged 'for e-bikes'. A good front and rear set that's bright enough for your route and clips on securely will keep you legal and seen.

The one practical wrinkle is the cockpit. E-bikes tend to have wider bars, a display and more cabling than a push bike, so check a light's mount will actually fit around all that before you buy.

Why e-bike riders often want more light

This is where being electric earns a brighter light. A normal commuter pootles along at 12 to 15mph. An e-bike holds 15.5mph without much effort, and you'll spend more of the year riding in the dark, because the assist makes a winter commute far less of a slog. The faster you go, the further ahead you need to see, or you end up overrunning your lights and reaching the pothole before the beam does.

As a rough guide for an electric bike:

  • Lit city streets: 200 to 400 lumens up front is plenty, paired with a bright rear. You're mostly being seen here
  • Suburban and mixed lighting: 400 to 600 lumens front covers most UK commutes
  • Unlit lanes at e-bike speed: 600 lumens and up, with a beam that throws down the road rather than just glowing close to the wheel

Should you wire lights into the e-bike battery?

It's a tempting idea. You've got a big battery sitting right there, so why charge a separate light at all? In practice it's more hassle than it looks. The motor controller's light output is capped low, often around three watts, which isn't enough to run a powerful front light. Tapping the main battery directly means a converter, careful wiring and a real risk of cooking the controller if you get it wrong.

Unless you're confident with bike electronics, it isn't worth it. A USB rechargeable light you charge alongside the bike is simpler, brighter and easy to move between bikes. You're already plugging the e-bike in. One more cable on the same night isn't the chore it sounds.
