Choosing the Right Bike Light Set

The right bike light depends on where you ride. City and well-lit suburban streets need enough light to be seen by drivers. Unlit roads and country lanes need lights bright enough to actually light the road ahead. UK law requires a white front light and a red rear light when riding between sunset and sunrise, with reflectors on the pedals.

How Many Lumens Do You Actually Need?

Lumens are a measure of brightness. As a rough guide for UK riding:

• Lit city streets: 100-300 lumens is enough to be seen.
• Mixed suburban roads: 300-600 lumens. Our 300 lumen set fits this perfectly.
• Unlit country lanes: 500-1,000 lumens. Our 500 lumen Twin T6 set is built for this.
• Off-road and trail riding: 1,000+ lumens, often with a helmet light too.

UK Bike Light Law in Brief

Under the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989, when riding between sunset and sunrise on a public road in the UK you must have:

• A white front light
• A red rear light
• A red rear reflector
• Amber pedal reflectors (front and rear) on each pedal

Flashing modes are allowed. Lights and reflectors should comply with British Standard BS6102/3 or an equivalent EU standard. All BTR rechargeable bike light sets meet the requirement when used on the steady setting.
